Hydraulic shock absorbers are used as a safety device, to effectively decelerate heavy masses. Hydraulic shock absorbers provide linear deceleration which means that an impacting mass is gradually slowed down over the shock absorbers complete stroke length, preventing high forces being transmitted between the mass and end stop. The kinetic energy of the impacting mass is converted into thermal energy by forcing the oil inside the shock absorber through a series of different sized holes.
